It shows how much market exposure your margin actually controls, and the leverage ratio behind it. You enter your margin, the currency pair, and your trade size, and it returns the full position value in your account currency, plus the leverage that position implies.

It answers one question before you trade: how much am I really controlling relative to what I've put up?

Leverage lets you control a large position with a smaller amount of your own capital. A ratio of 100:1 means every $1 of margin controls $100 of currency.

It works in both directions: the same price move produces larger gains and larger losses. The higher the leverage, the smaller the move needed to multiply or erase your margin.

It's the position's notional value divided by your margin. The calculator first turns your trade size into notional (units multiplied by price, converted into your account currency), then divides that by the margin you entered.

A position worth $100,000 held with $1,000 of margin needs 100:1 leverage. The larger the position relative to your margin, the higher the leverage required.

They're two sides of the same trade: margin is the input, leverage is the effect. Put up $1,000 to control a $100,000 position, and $1,000 is your margin while 100:1 is your leverage. Less margin on the same position means more leverage, and more risk.

High leverage shrinks the price move needed to lose your margin. At 100:1, a 1% move against you can wipe out your entire margin; at 500:1, it takes only 0.2%.

The position stays large while your buffer stays small, so ordinary market swings can close your trade.

Leverage doesn't change how likely a move is, only how much that move costs you, which is why sizing positions you can hold through normal volatility matters more than the ratio your account allows.

Yes. The math is identical for any account: notional divided by margin gives your leverage.

The one difference is that prop firms usually set their own leverage caps and risk rules, so check your firm's limits before you size a trade.

It means every $1 of your margin controls $100 in the market.

So $1,000 of margin controls a $100,000 position. The first number is your exposure, the second is your money.

The same logic scales to any ratio: 1:30 means $1 controls $30, 1:500 means $1 controls $500. The higher the first number, the larger the position a fixed amount of margin can open, and the smaller the price move needed to move your account.

There's no single right answer. The appropriate level depends on your strategy, the market you're trading, and how much risk you can hold. A useful way to think about it: leverage sets your maximum position size, but your risk per trade is what actually matters.

A margin call is your broker's warning that your account no longer holds enough margin to keep your open positions running. It happens when losing trades eat into your balance and your margin level drops below a set threshold.

If the account keeps falling, positions can be closed automatically (a stop-out) to stop the balance going negative.

Lower leverage is the safer place to start, because it gives your account more room to absorb a losing trade before it's in trouble.

Newer traders often stick to modest ratios while they learn how position size, stop losses, and volatility interact, then adjust as they build a track record.
